Interactive Media - CD Based Presentations

The Best Practices and Success Stories Global Network (BSGN) is UNEP's one-stop-shop for environmental Best Practices and Success Stories. BSGN seeks to enhance the visibility of and raise awareness about environmentally sound practices and about the successful implementation of environmental initiatives of the global community in general, and UNEP in particular.

It is a network of partners that will help to encourage knowledge sharing and promote replication of successful practices wherever possible. BSGN is a UNEP-wide service showcasing the impacts of its work, that of its collaborators, and the global public towards poverty alleviation, sustainable development, and environmental protection.

Situation
UNEP's Governing Council (GC)Meetings, held in two-year intervals, bring together high-power delegations from the world over. These delegations include representatives from government ministries and donor agencies, to lobby groups and other civil society organizations.

These delegations make up the target audience for BSGN in terms of the outputs that the initiative can deliver to support their various work programmes. As such it was imperative that even though BSGN was not one of the items on in the GC 22 agenda for discussion, it would be presented as an exibition item during this forum to capture the attention of the delegates. It is important to note that these delegates would at one time be the candidates for BSGN's funding campaign.

The challenge of developing a solution of this nature was based on the following considerations:

  1. The BSGN exhibiton booth was to be located in an area away from the main traffic of the event.
  2. The delegates had very little time in between meetings to attend other lengthy presentations.
  3. Most of the delegates would only be interested in the concept.
  4. There would only be one access point to the web site at any one time, and more than one person may wish to surf at that time.

Solution
Having analysed the above considerations, the concept of a rich media presentation was created. RSA engaged Equest New Media as consultants for design and development. Based on the delivery requirements of the presentation, RSA and Equest decided to develop three seperate movies, incorporate the use of voice in the presentation, and develop an application that would allow the presentor to switch between the different movies on the fly.

Tools - Macromedia Fireworks MX, Macromedia Flash MX, and Acid Pro 3.0.

Benefits
· Developed a "light", self-explanatory presentation that was agile enough to be presented at any time.

· Provided the audience with a complelling intoduction to BSGN while taking into account their time contraints.

· Provided a "hands-free" operation that allowed the presenter with the opportunity to attend to many visitors at the same time.
